Yom Kippur in Manalapan, NJ: Gmar Chatima Tova from FLOWERS Central Jersey

Today is Yom Kippur — the Day of Atonement, the most solemn day of the Jewish calendar. From sundown to sundown, many in our community are fasting, praying, and taking stock of the year gone by. There are no festive tables today — the honey cake had its moment at Rosh Hashanah, and if anyone overdid it, today's fast quietly settles the account. Today there is only stillness, candlelight, and reflection.
Why everything turns white
On Yom Kippur, many people wear white — a symbol of purity, humility, and new beginnings, like a blank page. Our florists couldn't help but notice: even the flowers seem to know. White roses, white lisianthus, white stock — nature's own way of dressing for the occasion. (We did ask our red roses to keep a low profile today. Even they understand: some days are for showing off, and today is for showing up as your best self.)
Gmar Chatima Tova — what it means
The traditional greeting of the day is "Gmar Chatima Tova" — "may you be sealed for good." It comes from the image of the Book of Life, in which, tradition says, we are all inscribed on Rosh Hashanah and sealed on Yom Kippur. It is a wish with real weight: not "have fun today," but "may the year ahead be a good one — you've earned it."
Candlelight and quiet beauty
Before the fast began, holiday candles were lit — small flames kindled deliberately, to carry a household through twenty-five hours of reflection. There is something deeply moving about that: light, lit on purpose, to see you through the dark. Flowers do the same quiet work. A vase of white blooms on the table doesn't celebrate or mourn — it simply says: this moment matters.
From our family to yours
To all our customers, neighbors, and friends observing Yom Kippur across Manalapan, Marlboro, Freehold, and all of Central New Jersey: Gmar Chatima Tova. May your fast be meaningful, may your reflections be kind — especially toward yourself — and may you be sealed in the Book of Life for a year of health, joy, and fresh flowers.
And when the shofar sounds tonight and the fast comes to an end — may your table be full and your year be sweet. We will be here all week with something beautiful for every table.
With warmth,
Your florists at FLOWERS Central Jersey
